I've launched a couple of fully responsive websites in the last few weeks.

If you're not familiar with the term “responsive”, it's a way of developing a website so that it reflows and resizes itself depending on the screen width of the user's device.

This means that users who visit your website on a mobile phone or tablet will have a much nicer experience as they won't have to be constantly zooming in and out all the time!

Scottish Golf History

Created by Neil Laid, the website has a wealth of information about the roots of the game of golf.

From the origin of golf terms such as ‘bogey‘ and ‘albatross’, to the history of the oldest golf societies and courses. If you're into the game (and even if you're not) it makes a fascinating read.

Neil had originally developed the website himself, but came to Purple Spider Web Design looking for a more modern (yet traditional) design, and an easier way to manage it's ever growing amount of content.

I came up with an new design that puts the content front and centre and focuses on making the content as readable as possible. With responsive development the site is easy to browse on all devices, so if you're out on a round and really want to know why there are 18 holes on a course you can easily look it up on your smartphone!

Built on the SilverStripe Content Management System the new site allows Neil to focus on writing the content, rather than styling it!

Hounslow Travel Active

The NHS Change4Life scheme provides advice to help people eat healthier and become more active.

The Hounslow Travel Active website has been jointly created by the London Borough of Hounslow, NHS Hounslow and Get Active Hounslow as part of the Change4Life scheme. They aim to provide the residents of Hounslow with information to help them get out walking and cycling more.

Designed in line with the extremely colourful Change4Life branding, I focused on making the site straightforward to navigate, to ensure the site is useful for both children and adults alike.

The homepage of the site acts as a dashboard to give visitors an overview of what the site offers, along with details of upcoming activities and events. Due to the nature of the site, the homepage needed to be very flexible, and so the SilverStripe CMS allows admin users to add new boxes of different types, sizes and colours to suit any new features that may be added in the future. Like the rest of the site, these homepage boxes all resize automatically to display nicely on tablets and smartphones.

If you live in the Hounslow area take a look, you're sure to pick up some local walking or cycling tips.
